e-Newsletter - February 2016

Opening shot

Quiberon - Venue for the 2016 OK Dinghy World Championship. The event website at okworlds.org is fully operational now with the Notice of Race and Online Entry Form. There are a lot of important details there so please read carefully. In the end we had 95 pre-entries. Let's see how many of them we can convert into real boats on the water. The 2014 World Champion Matt Stechman has been in Quiberon with the Groupama team and in his own words "The sailing will be mint!"
Editorial

Welcome to the February edition of the OK Dinghy International e-News bulletin. While the sailors in New Zealand and Australia are in the middle of a great season, those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are looking forward to spring and summer and the opportunity to do more sailing. And there is a lot of it coming up very soon.

With the Easter Regatta at Loosdrecht, closely followed by the European Championship/Sping Cup in Medemblik, it will be a great start to the season.

Further down this email you will see details of the coming events and especially those that go towards the World Ranking List. For the first time these are all listed on the OKDIA calendar on okdia.org together with the weighting each will get.

Go to okworlds.org to read up on our world championship this July in Quiberon and lots of details on camping, room bookings, online entry and the Notice of Race. Hopefully everything you need is there.

A lot of information has also been posted on 2017.okworlds.org about the approaching World Championship in Barbados. OKDIA will be coordinating all the sponsored container shipments from Europe. At the moment, each country should focus on collecting names of those who want to go. Read the website for more information and how the process will work.

I wish you all a great season and hope to see you out there sailing OK.

Robert
It's nearly that time of year year to be heading off the Spring Cup in Medemblik, except this year will be slightly different as it is also our first mini European Championship. Sign-up is now available here and the Notice of Race is with the OA waiting to be published.
Oceanbridge Sail Auckland starts this week. From the preview "One of the largest fleets to sail this year at 2016 Oceanbridge Sail Auckland is the OK Dinghy class in which big names with plenty of life experience to their name, like Olympic gold and silver and medalist Rod Davis and former OK World Champion Peter Lester will be on the start line. However they will face tough competition from defending Oceanbridge Sail Auckland Champion Luke O'Connell from Worser Bay Boating Club. " More. Event site.
Just before the Europeans, the Dutch OK Association would like to see all European OK sailors at the International Easter Regatta ( 26-28 March) - photo is at one of last years' races elsewhwere. Races will be sailed at Lake Loosdrecht (www.kwvl.nl) being one of the leading sailing clubs in the Netherlands, with a long track record organizing races. The lake is not far away from Amsterdam and Utrecht. Register with Alex Rijnink, hrijnink@gmail.com. Entrance Fee: €50. If there is sufficient interest a Clinic will be given on the 25th. Follow at www.ok-jol.nl, www.oksailing.nl. Facebook : OK Klasse Nederland.
There are several truly talented and dedicated sailors within the OK Dinghy class and one of them is definitely Bo Petersen from Denmark. After only a few years in the class, he has already won several titles, including the European Championship in 2013, and has quickly risen to become one of the stars of the class. Jonas Börjesson spoke to the current World No. 2, as he was curious to learn more about his background and what motivated him to start sailing the OK Dinghy at age 49 and how he acheived his rapid rise to the top. Read the interview here. The full interview will also appear in the upcoming OK Dinghy International magazine.

2017 World Championship  - Barbados

Lots of information has recently been published at 2017.okworlds.org including full reports and photo galleries from the venue visit undertaken in December. Pre-entry is already at 90 boats so it looks like it is going to be very popular.

Please pay particular attention to the Important Information page as this contains all you need to know about shipping and entry (or at least as much as we know as this stage).
Ben Morrison won the Hurricane Classic at Worser Bay Wellington from Luke O'Connell and Steve McDowell. More here.

Mark Jackson won the Australian OK Dinghy national title at Adelaide Sailing Club from Brent Williams and Peter Robinson. Final results here.
The 2017 European Championship will be be held in Faarborg, Denmark over four days in late-July. We'll publish confirmed dates and schedule as soon as possible, but judging by past Danish events this will be an extremely well organised championship. Faarborg is a really nice, old port town located on the island of Funen (the middle part of Denmark).
Luke O'Connell retained the New Zealand National title after a close series at Napier. Former Finn Olympian Dan Slater was the early leader but gear damage on the final day meant he couldn't sail. Ben Morrison ended up second with Mark Perrow third. Results and further links here.
Luke O'Connell also won the 2015 Rum Bucket at Wakatere, in Auckland from Dan Slater and Peter Lester with a great 29 boat turnout. Lots more Kiwi action here.

This is the proposed venue for the 2019 World Championships, but perhaps a bit more sunshine is needed.
Results fom the OK Dinghy invitation event in honour of the King of Thailand's 88th Birthday. Morten Jakobsen won from Thanakan Korkerd and Pornthep Pumyam.
Folkert Janssen won the Victorian State Championships at Royal Geelong Yacht Club by one point from Mike Williams with Bruce Ashton taking third. Full results here.

Technical Committee update

Over the last few months the Technical Committee has been discussing many items.

Gunwales: Gunwales are a rather a grey area in the rules at the moment and any wording needs to be more transparent for the new SCR. It has been discussed whether the class should make them mandatory and have a minimum size and length.  A mandatory gunwale also removes the possibility of a virtual sheer-line and the difficulties that creates for measurement.

Boards: In recent years there has been an increasing trend towards thinner boards. The TC has discussed whether the class should close this development down by either enforcing a minimum board thickness or minimum case width. It feels that keeping boards as one design as possible is in the best interests of the class.

Anything decided will be presented as proposals at the next AGM.

Meanwhile your TC Chairman has putting a lot of work into getting the new class rules together. They are taking shape nicely, although lot of rules and wordings have had to be modified to fit the new format. Hopefully the result will be a set of rules that is both simple and unambiguous. The Technical Committee will shortly be working through the current draft with a view to getting a working draft ready.
