Introduction

Dear sailors

Here is the first of what will be a regular missive from OKDIA. We will try and bring you timely news, updates and goings on at least once a month. This is currently sent to every sailor who has registered his email address with OKDIA or at an OKDIA championship in the past three years, so will secretaries please forward this to their members so we can build circulation. To subscribe to receive them direct to your inbox, please use the link at the bottom of the page or just go to www.okdia.org or here and complete your details. It will take 30 seconds. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Hope you enjoy this first attempt. If you have ideas for items to include or a local story we can cover please email publicity@okdia.org.

Robert

From the President

Dear OK Sailor,

I am pleased that you now are reading the first E-Newsletter.

As you will read we have now the venues in place for the next five world championships.

At the AGM in Melbourne it was also approved to remove the 80-90 boats limit, which means that future World Championships will be open if the clubs have the capacity to accommodate the sailors. This is great news as we want to see more sailors at these international events. It will enable sailors to make long term planning and will enable the organisers to make the events even better. The OK class is all about offering quality racing and social life for an affordable price. This is why we are a strong class and this is what will also make us strong in the future. In the recent years of economic crisis we have seen a steady growth in the class. Old sailors are coming to the class and new sailors are joining. We want to make international racing more accessible for new sailors as well, which is why this was a first and very important step.

Having bigger events also means a demand for a stronger class organisation to ensure the quality of the class and the events. At the AGM we had approved an increase in membership contribution. For many years the international class organisation contribution was kept to a minimum. This has now increased but is still on a very low level compared to other International Classes and will enable us to prepare for the future and bring the class and OKDIA forward.

Hope to see you soon on the water.

Bo Teglers
President OKDIA

Class news

Racing aside, the big news in the class at the moment is the adoption of most of the strategic plans, discussed through last year, at the AGM in Melbourne. Hopefully this trust in the workings of OKDIA will be well placed and all members will see the benefits of the evolving strategic plan.

Spring Cup 2015 - This popular event at Medemblik marks the start of the season for many sailors and this year promises to be one off the biggest yet. Sign up here: http://kzrvhollandia.nl/evenementen/spring-cup-2015/

OKDIA Magazine - A new magazine is being produced for OKDIA Members and friends of the class. We expect this to be complete for the start of the European sailing season. While the bulk of the costs will be covered by the increase in membership fees, we are also looking for advertising. You can find a Media Pack on the OKDIA website here. The current rates are based on producing one magazine each year, though of course if we get enough advertisers it can be produced more often.

Please send content and ideas for content to publicity@okdia.org

2015 Worlds in Puck - For those that have not seen it yet the event site is up and running at www.okworlds2015.pl. This year entry is open to everyone - the national quotas do not apply. Online provisional entry is already open on the website, so if you are planning to go please enter early so the organisers can plan ahead.

Worlds 2016-2019 - Another major decision of the 2014 AGM was the overwhelming vote to hold the 2017 World Championship in Barbados.

The most likely dates will be late-May. The idea discussed at the AGM was to cost share among nations, so there will be one entry fee for everyone, including shipping. Due to the Barbados tourism authority securing excellent sponsorship from Geest Line, tree are some great discounts with shipping from Europe. There may also be some possibility to container share with the Finns, who have their World Masters the week after our championship. Further details will be announced later but first estimates of a shared plan show an entry fee of between £500 and £800, including shipping.

Also in the last few weeks OKDIA has been in discussions with the German and French associations as they were pencilled in for 2016 and 2018. As a result of that OKDIA is pleased to announce that the 2016 worlds will be Quiberon and 2018 will be either Travemunde or Warnemunde. The German association will present their venue at the 2015 AGM in Puck.

This of course means that the class has its World Championship venues sorted for the next five years:

2015 Puck, Poland
2016 Quiberon, France
2017 Barbados
2018 Germany
2019 Auckland, New Zealand

Statement from OKDIA - Following the measurement concerns at the World Championship OKDIA has issued a Statement on Equipment Inspection, which has been published on the OKDIA website, You can read it in full here. Read more...

From the OKDIA World Ranking List Coordinator

With the introduction of these new OK e-Newsletters I thought it would be a good idea to include the list of all the Ranking Events this year and their respective weightings. The events that score ranking points are the International and Continental and Regional Championships plus all the National Championships and any other recognised International regattas. When an International event is sometimes shared with a National Championship, as is the case this year with Sail Auckland and the NZL Nationals, the lucky sailors get to count two scoring events. Last season we had the Crossing Borders Nationals with Denmark and Germany and Sail Melbourne/Australian Nationals.

Ranking lists are issued three times a year. The first one will come out after the Australian nationals at Easter, the second after Warnemunde and before the Worlds in Poland and the third after the last of the National Championships which this year is the German Championship in Potsdam.

The Ranking list was started in 2005 and to celebrate 10 years of the list I will publish an all time top 30 points scorers sometime in May.

Technical update

1. The proposed Class Rule changes from the 2014 Europeans and 2014 Worlds (which include Personal Sail numbers) are currently under consideration by ISAF. Once they have been approved ISAF will publish an amendment and they will pass into Class Rules. Please note that, as always, until they are approved by ISAF they are NOT class rules. I am, however, expecting a quick publication for the current set as they are fairly uncontroversial.

2. Given the heightened concerns voiced recently, the Technical Committee will shortly begin a discussion on weight concentration and its control. Introducing any sort of balance or swing test into the class has massive implications for builders and sailors alike and a proposal will not be made without considerable thought and feedback.

3. With the new financial structure available to the class, the Technical Committee Chairman will also be looking at the viability of rewriting the class Rules to be ERS compliant. This will not be a quick job, and similarly to the comments above, will not be introduced until it has passed vigorous testing by both the ISAF and OKDIA.

4. Contact lists of MNA measurers and national Chief Measurers are also being compiled so information can be sent directly to them. The OKDIA Chief Measurer is also keen to have direct access to all the MNA Chief Measurers.
